Can gerbils eat peanuts?
Short Answer
YesSafety Summary
- ✔ Safe: Yes — plain, unsalted
- ⚠ Use caution: High fat; no salt
- ✖ Toxic: Salted/flavored varieties
Why
Plain unsalted peanuts are safe for gerbils in small amounts and most enjoy them. Like sunflower seeds, they're high in fat and gerbils will seek them out preferentially, so moderation is important. One or two unsalted peanuts a few times a week is a reasonable treat. Never salted — their small bodies are very sensitive to excess sodium.
Portion Guidance
1–2 plain unsalted peanuts a few times per week.
Risks & Symptoms
- Salt: sodium toxicity
- Overfeeding: obesity, fatty liver
- No toxicity from plain peanuts
